A beard alone doesn’t make a Sunnah. That might sound bold, but it needs to be said. Too many brothers grow a beard in the name of religion, but leave it unruly, unclean, or neglected. And while growing the beard is a clear Sunnah, maintaining it with dignity, hygiene, and intention is a deeper part of honoring that Sunnah.
This isn’t about fashion. It’s about respect.
The Prophetic Standard
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) didn’t just have a beard. He cared for it. He oiled it. He combed it. His companions described it in detail—not just that he had it, but that it was beautiful, full, and fragrant. That’s not an accident. That’s grooming with purpose.
The same way we take care of our wudu, our clothes, and our teeth—our beard deserves attention. It is not simply a patch of hair on the face. It is a symbol of our faith, a manifestation of our adherence to the example of the Prophet.
Neglect vs. Zuhd
Some might confuse neglect with piety. "I don’t care how it looks, I’m not trying to please the people." That mindset is understandable, but it misses the mark. Zuhd (asceticism) in Islam doesn’t mean being dirty or careless. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most humble and the most clean. He wore white, used musk, and took pride in his appearance without arrogance.
If your beard smells bad, collects food, or looks matted, it doesn’t represent the Sunnah—it represents forgetfulness. And worse, it might turn people away from the beauty of our deen.
The Wisdom Behind Grooming
Why does grooming matter in Islam? Because Islam is holistic. Cleanliness is half of faith. That doesn’t just apply to the body, but to how we carry ourselves in public, in prayer, and in relationships.
Looking sharp isn’t vanity if the intention is to reflect the beauty of the deen. Your beard can be your da’wah. A clean, well-kept beard shows discipline, care, and connection to tradition.
The Basics of Sunnah Beard Care
Let’s get practical. Here are the essentials every brother should follow if he wants his beard to reflect the Sunnah in form and function:
1. Wash it regularly. Your beard collects dirt, food, and oil. Use a gentle cleanser (not harsh shampoo) to keep it clean. At least a few times a week, especially if you’re active or live in a hot climate.
2. Comb it daily. A wooden comb is best—it’s anti-static and gentle on the hair. Start from the bottom and work up to detangle. Then go back down to shape.
3. Oil it with intention. Beard oil is not just a luxury; it’s a revival of the Sunnah. It softens the hair, prevents breakage, and gives your beard a healthy shine. Most importantly, it makes your beard smell clean. That’s part of ihsan (excellence).
4. Trim stray hairs. Even if you grow your beard fully, it doesn’t mean you can’t tidy it up. Clean the edges, trim under the neck, and keep your cheek lines intentional. No need for harsh lineups—just honor the shape.
5. Don’t forget the skin underneath. A dry, itchy beard is often caused by neglected skin. Massage your oil into the roots. Exfoliate once a week. Healthy hair starts from healthy skin.
Addressing the Fear of "Overdoing It"
Some brothers worry that focusing too much on grooming leads to vanity or pride. That fear is valid, but the answer is intention.
There’s a big difference between grooming for the gaze of people and grooming for the sake of Allah—to honor His Messenger. If you check your heart and still choose cleanliness, excellence, and care, then you’re on the right path.
The same Prophet who encouraged growing the beard also said, "Allah is beautiful and loves beauty." (Muslim)
So if you wear a beard as part of the Sunnah, care for it like he did.
A Final Word
Let’s move past the bare minimum. Let’s elevate the standard for what it means to walk in the footsteps of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
And if you’re just starting out—if your beard is patchy, short, or new—remember: what matters most is how you treat it. A short beard that is well cared for holds more weight than a long one that’s been forgotten.
Need Help Starting?
Growing a new beard can get itchy. That irritation is one of the biggest reasons brothers give up early. But it doesn’t have to be like that.
Using a quality beard oil like Sunnah Scent can make the itchiness virtually zero. Made with prophetic ingredients like olive oil, argan, and date seed oil, it’s built to help your beard feel as good as it looks—from the first week to the full-grown stage.
Take care of your beard, and it will take care of your presence.
Because the Sunnah isn’t just to grow it.
It’s to honor it.
